Legends of the Airwaves - Chris Philips
August 27, 2009 12:55 PM PDT
Switching between jazz-funk, brit funk, soul, new jack swing, deep funk and house as he sits in the seat for Robbie Vincent on Sunday 21st February 1992 (Robbie was probably down the park feeding the ducks). Kiss FM supremo Chris Philips applies the pressure in all departments and a stunning show this is. We've tried our best to give you most of this one to appreciate the sounds of Incognito, Marxsman, Prince, Flora Purim, Escoffries, even Ronnie Jordan with I.G. Culture. Boy, this is what Sunday afternoons were made for and he was just warming up for Norman Jay. Ouch! You can still find Mr. Philips on Sunday afternoons via Choice FM London. Legends of the Airwaves - Patrick ForgeAugust 27, 2009 01:49 PM PDT
Nothing we can say will describe the diversity of Patrick's Cosmic Jam - possible the most listened too show of all time here at Vibe HQ... and boy do we have the cassettes to prove it! Jazz is treated with respect with upfront music from all walks of life. When the jazz drops, it drops heavy, the rest? Well, that as they say, is history. Patrick Forge fired up his last show on Kiss FM one year ago and shipped the Cosmic bus to Japan. So why did we pick this show from 1992? Because our very own Michael J Edwards picks up a prize... well, we had to have some sort of selection process - every show was solid. Good luck goes out to Patrick in his new home in Okinawa from all at UK Vibe. Legends of the Airwaves - Andy PeeblesAugust 28, 2009 03:23 PM PDT
Andy Peebles’ Soul Train first hit the airwaves in 1987 drifting from Sunday to Saturday evenings but it’s in 1990 when the station became a 24hr service that we give you a 40min sample of his late night Friday offering. Yes, we’re on BBC Radio One and just two more years before his departure. We hear his ‘Quite Storm’ feature and his trademark soul competition. The music is mainstream but the presentation is unflawed, a distinctive voice for radio in the UK. Now, nearly twenty years on you can still find him and his Soul Train on the Smooth Radio network– now that’s what we call dedication. Legends of the Airwaves - Daddy BugAugust 28, 2009 01:44 PM PDT
A full on soul show on Kiss FM from 1992 with the wonderful Jean Carne in interview - what more of a reason do we need to post this fabulous show - some great tunes. A monster show... Don't try entering his competition though, you're 19 years too late! |
Podcast SummaryWe keep talking about the people who played the music. It's easy to find out about the people but not so easy to hear the shows. We at UK Vibe decided to delve into the cassette library and offer up for you some amazing shows. We can't say the transfer to mp3 is great, we can't say every show is in full, but we can tell you they are samples from an era in the UK where people did not compromise.
